I did not want to believe our President that he had yet another little secret to tell us. There have been quite a few too many secrets for me with this Administration.
When I studied political science and law at the University of Minnesota I was taught about a different system of checks and balances of governmental power and Bill of Rights that we are currently experiencing in this country. The secret this time wasn’t leaked, uncovered, investigated or unearthed. This little secret was proudly announced on September 6, 2006 as the ramp up to the mid-term elections continue.
Why did this come out now? Do we believe this President and trust him to do the right thing with his “facts” regarding threats of terrorists? Are we really living in times when Congress must abrogate its oversight function, the courts must suspend the Constitution and we must trust George Bush to do the right thing? Why should we?
Do you realize that the Administration is now drafting to law to retroactively preclude prosecutions for War Crimes that will exculpate the arrogant and barbaric actions of torture conducted by our country with the blessing of this Administration.
Our Supreme Court has recently held that the Geneva Convention applies to these prisoners but this Administration is acting quickly to pass legislation to in effect overturn their decision. We will soon learn whether the terror strategy adopted by those in power will continue to terrorize our democracy.
